“Bad” habits after eating, what not to do after eating: the opinion of a nutritionist

After a hearty – or not – dinner, everyone has their own rituals. Someone likes to walk in the fresh air, someone likes to lie down to relax. And some can not do without tea with dessert. However, such habits are not always beneficial, and often even harmful. Nutritionist, food blogger, specialist at the International Festival of Healthy Lifestyle and Sports SN PRO EXPO FORUM Aliya Patashina says exactly what not to do after eating.

A burger – an hour in the aisle: how much is fast food “worth” your time?

Do not drink cold water

Cool water slows down the digestion process. This can cause spasm, contraction of the stomach walls. Generally, when you take cold water, the food is literally pushed out of the stomach. This is a direct path to obesity, because it is impossible to get enough and the feeling of hunger will come very quickly. I think you noticed that cold food saturates much worse than hot food. That’s why fast food restaurants are pushing aggressively packaged ice cream packages with ads and fancy posters. A person goes hungry very quickly and comes back again.

In addition, the digestive processes begin in the intestines, the food is not digested normally. The protein part of the food is not completely broken down and remains in the body. This can lead to intestinal diseases and dysbacteriosis.

Do not drink tea

Excessive alcohol consumption interferes with the digestive process. Tea also contains tannins, which can affect the absorption of important micro and macronutrients, especially iron, causing anemia, chronic fatigue and dizziness.

Some teas help digestion, such as greens or herbal teas. But for people who have stomach problems, it is not recommended to drink tea immediately after eating.

Do not go to bed

This is a very bad habit. Remember the motto: “Eat – can you sleep”? Why does he fall asleep after eating? The fact is that while eating, the parasympathetic nervous system is activated: it slows down the flow of blood to the muscle tissues and speeds up its flow to the digestive tract. The body is unable to combine digestion and strenuous activity, so after a hearty meal, it is often tempting to lie down.

But if you continue to take a horizontal position immediately after eating, some of the food juices may flow from the stomach back to the esophagus, causing heartburn. It is best to go to bed no earlier than two hours after dinner.

Do not smoke

Smoking after meals causes irritable bowel syndrome and is not the best way to affect the muscles of the colon. Nicotine causes vasospasm and disrupts oxygen metabolism and inhibits the production of digestive enzymes. Cigarette smoke enters the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract, irritates them and increases the risk of many diseases.

In addition, nicotine is absorbed along with nutrients from food. Its dose is equivalent to ten cigarettes smoked at a time. This makes smoking after meals particularly harmful. It is better to completely abandon such a bad habit.

Do not wear tight clothing

Tight jeans, an extremely tight waistband, a tight belt can cause food to move from the stomach back to the esophagus. This is called gastroesophageal reflux disease. To avoid unpleasant consequences, you should not leave carefully after dinner.

Do not bathe

Hot water increases blood flow to the entire surface of the body and reduces blood flow to the stomach area. Blood pressure and body temperature rise, the body has to rebuild its work. Because of this, the blood supply to the digestive organs is disrupted and can adversely affect intestinal motility.

It is worth doing introductory procedures 2-3 hours after eating.

Do not play sports

After eating, the parasympathetic system is activated, which is responsible for relaxation and rest – the body needs energy to digest food. The sympathetic system responsible for motion is less active at this time. Do not interfere with the digestion process. This applies to any workout, including swimming. During exercise, blood flow to the active intestinal muscles is reduced, colic and convulsions may occur.

Do not drive

After eating, all the forces of the body are directed to the assimilation of food, also reduces the blood supply to the brain. Both the reaction rate and the concentration are reduced. Do not get behind the wheel immediately, it is better to wait half an hour and then go out on the road.

Do not go for a walk

Walking immediately after a meal can cause acid reflux or indigestion. Go for a walk no earlier than half an hour after eating – such an activity will only benefit you.

Do not eat sweets

Drinking a hearty meal with a cup of tea for dessert is not a good habit. For many, dessert after a meal is a kind of ritual that puts an end to lunch. Many people get used to it from childhood.

The fact is that the feeling of fullness comes 20 minutes after eating. And the dessert can easily be overdone. Finish your meal at the “slightly full” stage, do not saturate yourself with satiety.

After eating, give your body time to digest food and absorb all the nutrients. Leave things for later.
