smartphone for young people with 50 MP camera, NFC and DTS audio / Smartphone and mobile phones / iXBT Live

Last fall, Tecno introduced to the world a new smartphone called the Spark 8P, which is positioned as a device for young people with an original look and good value for money.

Factory packaging

The Tecno Spark 8P is available in bright orange with an unusual pattern and NFC reference on the device. On the back there is a limited amount of information with the capabilities of the smartphone.

Inside, we are greeted by a fairly pleasant package, which includes an extra month of warranty and a silicone bumper for basic protection. The charger is a single port with a maximum power of 10 W, but the cable received an old microUSB socket.

As Tecno has been the official sponsor of Manchester United since 2016, the corresponding logo is on the bottom of the silicone sleeve. Otherwise, everything is standard: it covers the cameras, the case protects.

  • CPU: MediaTek Helio G70 (12nm)
  • Display: IPS 6.6 ” (1080 * 2408px, 20: 9, 60Hz)
  • Memory: 4 LPDDR4X / 128GB eMMC 5.1, microSD card support
  • Camera: 8MP FF / 50 + 2MP
  • Battery: 5000mAh battery; Charger 10W
  • Operating system: Global version based on Android 11, HiOS 7.6
  • Communications: Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n, Bluetooth 5.0 LE, GPS, 3.5 mm audio jack, microUSB, NFC
  • Sensors: Fingerprint (laterally mounted), accelerometer, proximity
  • Network: 4G / LTE; 3G; GSM; two SIM card slots
  • Dimensions and weight: 164.5 * 76.1 * 8.9mm, 209g

It is no coincidence that the Spark series is called youth, as the design and available colors (turquoise blue, Atlantic blue, iris purple, cocoa gold) only emphasize this direction. Conventionally, the back of the smartphone consists of 2 components: a glossy camera unit with the name of the device line and the textured relief. Also pay attention to the smooth flow of color and the syllable STOP NOTHING, which shimmers in the light.

Apart from the fact that the camera block is shimmering with colors, it is also framed by a small frame around the perimeter. All 3 modules built into it support AI work for high resolution night vision.

As for the list of cameras used, everything is fine here:

  • 50Mp main unit with f1.6 aperture and phase detection autofocus
  • 2Mp portrait unit with f2.4 aperture
  • AI lens with aperture f2.0

As befits a modern device, the Spark 8P is equipped with a fingerprint sensor, combined with a power button on the side. The response speed is high, for the entire operating time did not cause any complaints. I was also pleased with the presence of a combined slot for some nanoSIM memory cards and a microSD memory card.

For all my sympathy for the smartphone, the latter received an outdated microUSB slot for charging and data transfer. Such a solution does not limit us in any way to the use of a charger with support for fast charging, but the Spark 8P excelled in this, accepting only power up to 10 W.

But the sound pleased! It is also possible with a variety of low frequencies. When playing music tracks, you feel a pleasant tremor in the area of the back cover.

Although we have a budget line from Tenco, I was pleasantly surprised to see a high quality 6.58 inch IPS display with 1080 * 2408p resolution. The useful area is 90.1% of the entire linear part of the hull. The pixel density is 440 DPI, so you will not be able to see the scale in the components.

A set of sensors is typical for its class – a light sensor, proximity and an acoustic speaker. There is also an 8MP front camera with autofocus and a bright flash with adjustable power. I saw such a solution for the first time, although before the Spark 8P I tried many TRANSSION Holdings devices (Tecno, Infinix).

The Spark 8P uses a high quality IPS matrix with good viewing angles and a screen tone close to cool. The minimum brightness level is so low that when you work with a smartphone on the street, you can see absolutely nothing and at night you have to get used to the text. The maximum level of brightness is sufficient for comfortable operation of the phone in street lighting.

Operating system

The system shell of the Tecno Spark 8P is HiOS with serial number V7.6.0, based on Andorid 11. The shell is simple, intuitive, with small changes. When you first turned on the smartphone, the system offered an update, so there will be updates!

There are almost no “extra” applications in the Spark 8P and most of the software presented is part of the HiOS shell (for example, Audio Share is intended for simultaneous audio transmission on multiple devices, Boomplay is a local analogue of Spotify, Calcare is an electronic warranty card and post-warranty service).

Synthetic tests

I have never encountered the Helio G70, so I do not know its capabilities. But according to the technical data, it is a modern SoC, which is released in a 12nm technical process and has a structure of 2 Cortex-A75 cores with a frequency of 2000 MHz and 6 Cortex-A55 cores with a frequency of 1700 MHz. In fact, the Helio G70 is a direct competitor to the Snapdragon 665, which was released a year earlier (2019 vs. 2020) and is built with more process technology (11nm). In fact, it means that the performance is enough for all daily tasks, but without a large basis for demanding games.

For lovers of detailed information about the devices:

I’m interested in doing synthetic tests to compare with other processors and understand its capabilities. Thus, the Helio G70 has a performance of 205 thousand points in Antutu, while the Snapdragon 665 does not give more than 166 thousand points. If we compare the G70 with the next generation of Helio processors (G80 / G85 models), then the gap is 0 and 23.97% (254,039 points in the Infinix Note 11 review). But leaving aside the dry numbers, I want to note the good optimization of the shell and the system as a whole, so there is no inconvenience during operation.

  • Antutu: 204913
  • Geekbench 4: 997, 371/1265
  • 3D Mark: Wild Life – 589, Wild Life Extreme – 151, Sling Shot – 1601, Sling Shot Extreme – 1194.

The final test is a test of the built-in storage and RAM speed. The Helio G70 processor only supports eMMC 5.1 storage type and provides 311/255 MB / s read and write. Therefore, it is not necessary to wait for high speeds, as well as to maintain the speed parameters when the engine is full. At the same time, the RAM is represented by the LPDDR4X type and gives an incomplete 12,000 MB / s.

The Tecno Spark 8P is equipped with a large 5000mAh battery that can run on my test for 10 hours and 30 minutes. This rating is below the average on the chart, about the same level as the Tecno Camon 18 I recently tested. During my operation, the smartphone easily holds a charge until the end of the day, without problems the next day.

Let’s add the received data to the table to compare the results with other devices.

The supplied power supply is designed for an output power of 10 W, so the battery charge time is 3 hours 24 minutes. The maximum power is maintained in the range from 0 to 35% of the total capacity, after which there is a gradual decrease. You can see this graph in 2022 only with sadness in the eyes. After all, while some devices have learned to charge in 15 minutes using GaN at 100W, others continue to create 10W limitations. By the way, I recommend you read the review of the fast charging Ugreen GaN 100W.

Due to the fact that the Helio G70 is a fairly recent processor (announced in January 2020), its structure uses an updated modem that supports LTE Cat. 7 communication template. Pay attention to the first screenshot that shows the speed characteristics of the mobile phone company Megafon while you are in a high-rise building. I did not notice any problems with receiving / transmitting the Internet, as well as interruptions in mobile communication. One of the pleasant features – regular recording of a conversation without notifying the other party.

When working on the Tecno Spark 8P as a navigator, you can have an accuracy of up to 2 meters in the first minute of the geographical position. The following navigation systems are available to the user: GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo.

Although the Helio G70 is a representative of MediaTek’s G series of games, it is foolish to demand that resource-intensive applications run in high graphics settings. Therefore, the main emphasis can be placed on casual games, with which the Tecno Spark 8P has no problems, or run those games that support flexible graphics settings.

Photo opportunities

The Tecno Spark 8P smartphone is equipped with four photomodules, three of which are located at the back and one at the front. Let’s start with the rear units, one of which is an AI sensor. As for the other two, it is a standard beam with 50Mp main sensor (Samsung ISOCELL JN1: 1 / 2.76 ”, 1.28 μm, Super PDAF dual phase autofocus) and 2Mp portrait (GalaxyCore GC02M1 (1 / 5 “, f / 2.4, 1.75 .m) This combination is used in many devices and allows you to have a high quality image on budget and mid-range smartphones.

A special feature of TRANSSION Holdings smartphones is the excellent study of the night mode, called Super Night Mode. The main camera in combination with the AI module just makes a magical image in low light conditions. The work of the vertical orientation function and the GC02M1 unit is painfully familiar, trying to respect all blurred boundaries. In general, autofocus is fast, the camera is good.

If you give priority to the front camera, then you should be satisfied with the 8Mp Galaxycore GC08A3 (f1 / 4 “, /2.2, 118 degrees) .This camera supports autofocus, provides blur portrait mode and is equipped with single flash with adjustable power.

To summarize, I want to say this, when designing the Spark 8P, the Tecno brand focused on the youth segment, ignoring one of the important factors – slow charging. Otherwise, everything is quite modest and for a relatively small budget we have: a sleek look, a bright and juicy FullHD IPS screen, loud and high quality sound, a smart case with a minimal set of third-party software, NFC support, and an electronic warranty card with extra month guarantees. If the task is to choose a good smartphone that will perform all the functions assigned to it, then the Tecno Spark 8P is definitely worth your attention. The retail price suggested by Tecno partners for the 4/64 GB version of the smartphone is 12,990 rubles. See the following links for current prices:
