The Poronaisky State Natural Reserve was established by decree of the RSFSR Council of Ministers on March 30, 1988. It is located in the Poronai region, in the eastern part of Sakhalin Island in the most extensive part of Tym – the Poronai Plain and the southernmost part of the central mountain range. of the mountains of eastern Sakhalin. It consists of two parts – Nevsky and Vladimirsky. The total area of ​​the reserve is 56.7 thousand hectares, which is 7.8% of the area and 0.65% of the Sakhalin area.

The length of the reserve limits on land is about 60 km, on water – 300 km. The reserve is located in the distribution area of ​​dark coniferous forests dominated by spruce. The fauna of the forest part of the reserve is dominated by taiga species with the addition of forms characteristic of the broad-leaved forests of Primorye. Birds of the sea colonize nest on the rocks: petite mulberry, gull with black tail, spectacled glasses, big and small, old man, white belly and more. A large bird market is located in Cape Patience. The following species are included in the Red Book of Russia: Sakhalin deer, Aleutian sternum, mandarin duck, white-tailed deer, Steller’s sea eagle, osprey, mallard, peregrine falcon. Economically valuable species include reindeer, sable, otter, brown bear living in the shelter.

In order to reduce the negative effects on the natural complexes of the reserve, a neutral zone has been created around it. The main goal of the Poronai shelter is to preserve the natural reference landscapes that are characteristic of the middle of Sakhalin. Recently, the issue of extending the boundaries of the specially protected area of ​​the Poronaisky shelter was raised. The reserve has experience in conducting ecological educational tourism. This type of tourism allows you to reflect on nature without affecting it, it makes it possible to meet the inhabitants of the shelter, from within to monitor the relations in the ecosystems.
