Affordable smartphone in 2022 – what is it? The vivo V23e showed the pros and cons

Economical smartphones are improving faster than flagships. They also chase trends, move en masse from IPS monitors to AMOLED, or increase the usable area on the front panel. But at the same time, devices cheaper than 45 thousand rubles are adopting more and more iconic parameters. For example, 350 thousand points in Antutu and unrestricted performance for the price level of 25-35 thousand rubles is already a given, not uncommon. This also applies to other features.

The Vivo V23e came to our review. This is a mid-range smartphone – a segment where you do not expect unique features and capabilities from a smartphone, but at the same time it should look decent in all respects (screen, camera, performance, autonomy). Let’s see what he can do.

In terms of ergonomics, the vivo has decided not to be original, the smartphone is made in a classic style for 2022 – a teardrop-shaped notch for the front camera, the rear camera on a rectangular platform.

Separately, I note the sharp side edges – this is the trend of 2021 and 2022, previous Android smartphone brands ignored this external element and added beveled or rounded edges. I like this solution – the smartphone is a bit more convenient to hold in your hand, there is no feeling that it is going to slip out of your hand.

Otherwise, the smartphone does not stand out in touch. If I were asked to describe it in one word, I would say “normal”. This is not a mistake or a compliment. The device does not surprise externally, but combines all the features that will allow it to please the majority.

The weight of the device is 172 grams. It feels light in the hand, it does not weigh down the clothes when you carry them in your pocket. Thickness – 7.41 mm, the usual value. The camera swells a lot, however, it needs a little familiarity as it is a general cost required to equip the device with high quality optics.

In terms of design, the smartphone already stands out. The glow stripes diverge along the rear panel, changing color depending on the angle of incidence of the light. The back panel itself is painted in three different colors – blue, lilac and pink. In addition, the transition is abrupt, the same stripes separate them. Color, honestly, amateur.

In summary, we can say that visually the smartphone proved to be successful. Modern and familiar solutions from the point of view of the exterior are combined with the original colors. This means that the device is easy to get used to and visually it will bring positive emotions to both you and those around you.

The set of parameters is optimal for 2022. The matrix type is AMOLED, the diagonal is 6.44 inches, the resolution is Full HD +, the aspect ratio is 19.5: 9.

Separately, I note the brightness of 720 cd / m2. This price is higher than the market average for such a price. With such a screen, it is convenient to use a smartphone in a bright day – the screen does not shine, the color reproduction is not distorted, you do not need to cover it with your hand to see the contents clearly.

Disadvantages of the screen include a refresh rate of 60 Hz. And in 2022, a smartphone in the price range of 25-35 thousand rubles should have at least 90 Hz, ideally 120 Hz. I’m used to the fact that the desktop and application interface have become smoother in the last two years, with the vivo V23e there is no feeling that something is wrong with the screen, as if in terms of user experience I’ve been back for a couple of years. In addition, some popular games already support 120 Hz. For example, PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty: Mobile, Fortnite. This means that even with a powerful processor, the smartphone will not reveal all its features.

In the Antutu test, the device scores 355,000 points. The POCO M4 Pro is sold at the same price, gives the same amount. Among the direct competitors, only the realme GT Master Edition is higher (541,610 points), which means that the smartphone can be considered one of the most powerful for its price.

I have run three demanding games on it – PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty: Mobile and Fortnite. All this was activated automatically in high graphics settings, in any case, after an hour of continuous play, the case did not overheat, no throttle was observed.

Memory is definitely a plus. The amount of RAM is 8 GB. This option allows you to run and keep two applications open at the same time. For me it was PUBG and Telegram, for an hour of active use, none of them restarted.

128 GB is enough to store application data, as well as photos and videos for a year and a half without restrictions. From personal experience, with the active download of games and applications, as well as the storage of photos and videos, about a third of the unit will be full in six months.

Disadvantages of the device include autonomy. The capacity of the battery is 4000 mAh, with moderate load (messenger, social networks, browser, music), the device works all day. This is not a bad thing, only in 2022 the rule is one and a half to two days. Tolerated, but it could be done better.

Let’s start with the front camera, there is something to talk about. Its resolution is 50 MP. I am not in favor of the fact that resolution is the main parameter for the camera, but here is an exception. Selfies are where we pay special attention to detail, white balance and color reproduction. 50 MP solves the first problem.

The resulting selfies can be cropped and enlarged, while the quality will not decrease. I was impressed with how the camera captures the smallest details, such as eyelashes or eyebrow textures. When enlarged, they are not oiled and the image remains high quality.

Maximum video capture capabilities are 1080p 30 FPS. Some journalists have criticized the smartphone for such low parameters, I will avoid – on social networks, stories and video broadcasts are limited to 720p 30 FPS, so the smartphone meets these standards. If you are blogging on YouTube, then you will already need the full technical capabilities of the camera – 1080p 30 FPS. Why reporters require 4K 60 FPS, I do not understand, so I think the front camera is great.

The portrait function is implemented at the right level – the object in the foreground is qualitatively cut off from the background. Overall, I think vivo is the best brand in terms of bokeh quality.

The main camera is triple – 64 + 8 + 2 MP. This is the main camera, the ultra wide angle and macro unit. Model set for 2022. The last unit was added honestly for beauty – there is no autofocus, the detail is awesome. It is added for quantity reasons, however three or four cameras are the rule of good format for smartphones of the last two or three years. If on the flagships all three are functional (main, wide-angle, telephoto), then on more affordable models you have to take them out using a macro unit or a depth-of-field sensor.

The main camera shoots perfectly. I was particularly pleased with the dynamic range – the images are massive, the color palette is rich and the detail is retained even in the dark areas of the photo on a clear day.

At night, the images are also of high quality. I like the vivo algorithms and the emphasis on color reproduction – the images are juicy and saturated. In almost all the reviews, I say that I like the naturalness in the night shots, this model, like other devices of the brand, adds variety and pleasant surprises.

Night mode is supported by the main unit and the extremely wide angle. And he is no longer so happy – the dynamic range and detail are falling, which is inevitable according to the laws of physics, but they make it unusually loud, the images are unnatural.

During the day, the extremely wide is also not happy – the colors are very dull, there are noises even in ideal lighting conditions. This is a typical situation for a smartphone at this price, and yet, it is worth noting a common problem – in the price range below the flagship (from 65 thousand rubles), brands tend to maintain the number of units without thinking about their quality. Unlike the macro and depth sensor, the wide-angle sensor can be used, but only in ideal lighting. At the same time, it is equipped with modern features, such as night mode, but for show. And I would like to see the desire to improve the quality of the images.

In general, the camera is not without flaws, but interesting. The balance of pros and cons for vivo does not change from year to year – I really like portrait photos, but the desire to get into trends by adding “junk” sections, frankly, infuriates.

To attract the attention of a B brand (in addition to the 5 most popular in Russia), it is necessary to offer a unique user experience. The Vivo V23e has a balance of features combined with a comfortable body and original colors.

The smartphone does not have unique parameters, while there is no alternative on the market with such a powerful processor, as well as 8 GB of RAM and a screen with a brightness of 720 cd / m2 for 29,990 rubles.

Disadvantages include autonomy and the screen in all other parameters except brightness. Their performance is not bad, but they are inferior to the competitors and eliminating these shortcomings could make the vivo V23e almost the best portable device in its price range. In the meantime, this is just a very high quality model.
