The State Museum of Oriental Art hosts two more interesting room exhibitions until mid-May.

a. “Animals and imaginary creatures in the ancient civilization of Eurasia” (17/03/2022 – 05/10/2022)

Since prehistoric times, animals have been transformed by humans into objects of civilization. They made them symbols of supernatural powers, as well as a means of communication with the divine world. In the mythological tradition, the heroes were endowed with the qualities and supernatural abilities of animals.

All the peoples of the Earth have beliefs about animals. Unusual and mysterious properties were attributed to several true mammals, birds and amphibians. Among them are people endowed with supernatural qualities. Based on these ideas, a religious system was developed in primitive society – totemism. This is an idea of a supernatural connection, kinship of a breed or race of people with a particular species of animal. The totem is an animal that was considered the ancestor of the breed, its ancestor.

Most of the exhibits were obtained during excavations carried out by archeological missions of the State Museum of Oriental Art in the Northwest Caucasus (Republic of Adygea and Krasnodar Territory), Chukotka and Central Asia (Republic of Uzbekistan).

2. “Master of modern printed graphics. Harumi Sonoyama. Lithography “. (30/03/2022 – 17/04/2022)

The exhibition will feature more than 20 works by a contemporary Japanese artist from the “Paints”, “Out of Color” and “Omen” series, dating from different periods from the 1980s to 2020.

Harumi Sonoyama was born in 1950 in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. He graduated from the Department of Painting at Jokei University in Tokyo (1972). In 1976-1978. Thanks to a grant from the Japanese Office of Cultural Affairs, he completed an internship in Europe and the United States. Harumi Sonoyama is a member of the Japanese Artists Association, a committee of the Japan Printed Graphic Arts Association, a participant and winner of numerous exhibitions.

The terrorist attacks that took place in the United States on September 11, 2001 had a huge impact on the artist’s worldview and all his subsequent work. From observing objects, manipulating color, Sonoyama in the next series “Omen” passes to reflections on life and death through the meditative contemplation of the aspects of white fabric.

Sonoyama is one of the few traditional craftsmen who prefers computer processing to be exclusively on hand, including preparing stone or plates for printing, designing, engraving and painting.

The artist’s works are in the collections of the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum (London), the Cleveland Museum of Art, the National Art Museum of China (Beijing), the Taipei Museum of Fine Arts, the National Museum of Oriental Art ( Moscow) and other museums.
