Authorities have revealed the main climate problems in the Rostov region

How Climate Risks Can Affect the Don Area.

Rostov-on-Don authorities have named the region’s main climate threats. These include drought, heat and fire hazards. Experts attributed them to the dangers of a “very dangerous level”, according to the approved climate change adaptation plan.

Main climatic hazards

Thus, the Rostov region is characterized by a significant rise in temperature from May to September. Often in summer, the thermometer reaches 40 degrees and sometimes rises higher. Abnormal heat leads to adverse effects. It adversely affects the well-being of citizens and also leads to the death of animals, fish in Don tanks. What can we say – even the equipment can not stand: electricity is cut off, road accidents occur, including those involving public transport. For Rostovites, the heat of summer sometimes becomes a real ordeal, especially if they travel by public transport. From year to year in the summer, hundreds of Rostovites complain about the heat on the buses.

It seems that the heaviest rainfall that sometimes covers Rostov and other cities and regions of the region in the summer should moisten the soil well. However, experts still single out drought as one of the most dangerous climatic hazards in the Don region.

Atmospheric drought means the absence of rainfall (5 mm or more per day) for more than 30 days at a maximum air temperature above 30 degrees. If for a month the productive moisture reserves in the soil layer 0-20 cm are less than 10 mm and in the soil layer 0-100 cm – less than 50 mm, such a drought is called soil drought.

Drought has a negative impact on agriculture. For example, according to government figures, in 2020, 36,000 hectares of agricultural crops were lost in the Peschanokopsky region as a result of drought.

The Rostov region is characterized by a high (grade 4) and extreme (grade 5) fire risk. Don’s rescuers often issue a storm warning because of this. No wonder – a small flame can turn into a huge fire. In the summer, fires of dry vegetation and reeds often occur in the area.

In order to prevent the formation of forest fires, every year in the Rostov region a regime of restricting the stay of citizens in the forests is introduced. It is now valid until June 9, but after that date it will probably be extended. We remind you that as long as restrictions apply, the residents of Donetsk are not allowed to enter the forests by means of transport and perform work there.

Other risks

As less dangerous (but still dangerous) climate risks in the Rostov region, experts suggested landslides, abrasions, treatment of banks of reservoirs, lakes, level erosion and ravines, hurricanes, tornadoes, strong winds, frosts and strong winds, frosts, strong winds in Don River water.

Risk = Opportunity

However, climate change in the Rostov region can have more than just negative consequences. The authorities see some opportunities in this as well. In particular, the document says, it will be fashionable to save energy due to heating and reduce the duration of the heating season. In addition, prospects are being created for the development of renewable energy sources.

Opportunities for agriculture are also mentioned. The redistribution of cereal production soil will make it possible to use most of the territory for the cultivation of highly thermophilic crops. It is possible to extend the sowing of more drought-resistant and winter crops, to introduce types and varieties of crops with a longer growing season in the practice of grain production and also to shift the sowing dates for spring crops to an earlier date.
