227 eggs, 218 kg of milk and dairy products and almost 93 kg of meat – this is exactly what, according to statistics, an average resident of the Moscow region eats every year. How useful is the love for these dishes and what should be added to the dish of our compatriots to get closer to the principles of healthy eating, said experts from Rospotrebnadzor and the Nutrition Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. The experts even created an interactive map of the diet of the inhabitants of the areas, which was carefully studied by our correspondents.
WHAT ARE WE EATING
Climate, availability of natural resources and cultural and ethnic characteristics – these are the factors that determine what exactly will be laid on the table of every resident of our country. Experts from Rospotrebnadzor and the Nutrition Research Institute came to this conclusion – they analyzed the menu of each Russian region and plotted this data on a special map. The result was very clear – it turned out that in some areas of our country, residents overdo it with meat products, but vegetables and fruits are malnourished and vice versa. Thus, the population of Dagestan proved to be the biggest meat lovers in Russia – every average citizen of this republic consumes 110 grams of protein per day. At the same time, the neighboring Territory of Stavroupoli with beef, chicken breast and dairy products, by contrast, is malnourished – only 65 grams of protein per person per day. Most of all carbohydrates – read cereals, vegetables and fruits – in Russia are consumed, paradoxically, by no means in the Krasnodar Territory, but in the North Caucasus. The Moscow region also has its own nutritional characteristics. But, according to experts, their usefulness is far from ideal.
HEALTH ON A PLATE
According to the consumption of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, our region is officially included in the standards. For example, the fat in the daily diet should be from 72 to 151 g per day. In the Moscow region, this number is just over 118 g.
“In the diet of the inhabitants of the Moscow region, it is within the permissible range, but it is clear that we are not too far from the upper limit of the rule,” said Nadezhda Raeva, head of the Moscow Food Hygiene Supervision Department. Rospotrebnadzor region. Obviously, this is due to the love of fast food and other products that contain saturated fat. And this, as you know, sausage, smoked meats, pork, greasy sour cream, chocolate, condensed milk and other tasty but harmful products.
In terms of calories, the average diet near Moscow is also not the most ideal. Normal eating habits for men are from 2100 kcal per day and for women – from 1800. In the Moscow region, the average energy value of food is 2757 kilocalories – this is a bit too much. Hence the health problems, according to Rospotrebnadzor. Indeed, the frequency of such diagnoses as diabetes, obesity, circulatory and gastrointestinal disorders – the so-called digestive diseases – depends directly on the composition of the diet.
In the Moscow region, according to the latest data, diabetes was diagnosed in 175 cases per 100 thousand population, obesity – in 185 cases, diseases of the circulatory system – 2786 cases and gastrointestinal tract – in 3696 per 100 thousand people. This means that we have not yet exceeded the average Russian indicators, but we are moving towards it at a fairly fast pace, – says Nadezhda Raeva.
EGGS, MEAT AND MILK
The food map also shows a list of favorite foods for residents of the Moscow region. So mainly our citizens eat eggs, milk and dairy products, vegetables and pumpkins and meat. This diet is due to the intensive development of the agricultural industry near Moscow. At the same time, as the authors of the list note, “genetically” in the Moscow region there should be difficulties with agricultural potential. The fact is that our region is located in the center of Eastern Europe. According to the research of the “Diet Map” program, in the Moscow region do not eat enough plant foods. For example, at a rate of 120 kg of vegetables per person per year, our average citizen eats only 102.4 kg and fruits and berries – a third less than they should. But the amount of meat and meat products on the table can be reduced – at a rate of 70 kg per year, each of our compatriots consumes almost 93 kg.
Fact: According to the Nutrition Charter of Russia, the Moscow region is a self-sufficient region that fully provides its population with basic food. According to data for 2020, almost 260 thousand tons of meat and meat products, more than 700 thousand tons of milk and 137 million eggs were produced in the Moscow region, and the collection of open and protected ground vegetables in the same period exceeded 5,077 thousand centers.
