Rosneft celebrated World Environment Day

On June 5, the global community celebrates World Environment Day every year. 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of this date by the UN General Assembly. The main goal is to draw attention to the need for a responsible attitude towards the environment.

In Russia, this Day is scheduled to coincide with the professional holidays of all Russian nature conservation experts – Ecologists Day. Approved 15 years ago by decision of the President of the Russian Federation.

One of Rosneft’s priorities in conducting its business is to be careful about its natural resources. The Company annually implements a series of measures and investment projects aimed at improving the environmental performance of productive activities, minimizing the environmental impact and promoting the conservation of biodiversity.

The key elements of the Company’s long-term environmental agenda are the Rosneft 2030 strategy: Reliable energy and global energy transition, which was approved by the Company’s Board of Directors at the end of 2021, and the concept of Environmental Development until 2035.

Reducing the carbon footprint is one of the key priorities of the new strategy. The Company aims to achieve clean carbon neutrality in Field 1 and 2 emissions by 2050. The Rosneft-2030 strategy also sets the short- and medium-term horizons of the climate agenda: by 2025, a 5% reduction in absolute greenhouse gas emissions; in 2030 – reduction of methane emissions to less than 0.2%, zero ignition of the relevant oil gas routine, reduction of specific greenhouse gas emissions in the research and production department at a level of less than 20 kg CO2 / bbl. ONE D; by 2035 – reduction of absolute greenhouse gas emissions by more than 25% by 2020.

Rosneft’s environmental targets for 2035 include:

  • minimizing environmental impact, including through the introduction of the best available technologies and, consequently, increasing the efficiency of waste disposal, land reclamation, wastewater treatment and emission processes;

  • introduction of the principles of the circular economy (“circular economy”);

  • protection and conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity.

  • The systematic approach of the Company includes the development and application of technologies in order to reduce the negative impact on the environment. Among the most effective proposals implemented by Orenburgneft is the technology for the rational use of relative oil gas (APG) by the Rybkinskaya field group. To solve the problem, the reserve capacities of the Vakhitovskaya gas compression plant and the Zagorskaya APG processing unit were used.

    In 2021, the company RN-Vankor allocated more than 18 billion rubles for environmental protection measures. Including: for the construction of environmental facilities, for the activities of the Vankor gas project, for projects for the beneficial use of the relevant oil gas. The APG usage rate in the Vankor field is one of the highest in the industry – over 99%. In 2021, Bashneft allocated more than 6.5 billion rubles for the implementation of projects for environmental protection. The measures implemented allowed the reduction of the total load in the atmosphere by 10%. The investments were directed to projects in the field of safe disposal of industrial waste, land restoration, reforestation and replenishment of fishery resources.

    In 2021, the Syzran oil refinery, the petrochemical company Novokuibyshev and other companies commissioned universal mobile environmental sites for water and soil monitoring. Mobile laboratory equipment allows on-site assessment of the quality of natural, waste, circulating water, soil sampling, high-precision determination of some important physical and chemical properties of water and soil, such as pH, electrical conductivity, concentration various compounds. The laboratory reports are sent to the state control and supervision authorities.

    In its operations, Rosneft prioritizes reducing emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas whose specific impact potential is tens of times greater than that of carbon dioxide. The Group’s subsidiaries use unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with laser scanners and camcorders to monitor methane emission sources and also introduce ground monitoring methods. Currently, UAV monitoring is carried out in major production companies: Samaraneftegaz, Bashneft-Dobycha, Udmurtneft, RN-Nyaganneftegaz, RN-Uvatneftegaz, Tomskneft, RN-Krasnodarneftegaz, RN-Yuganzgnef, RN-Yuganazgne.

    Rosneft is systematically increasing Euro-6 fuel production with improved environmental performance. In 2021, for example, RNPK produced more than 2 million tonnes of high-octane gasoline AI-95-K5 Euro 6. The production and sale of Euro 6 fuel made it possible to reduce total sulfur emissions by almost half.

    Rosneft pays particular attention to activities aimed at conserving biodiversity, in particular to biodetector endangered ecosystem study projects and unique fauna representatives. As part of the national project Ecology, the Company continues studies, monitoring and protection of animals in the Arctic, which are indicators of the ecosystems of the area (wild reindeer, polar bear, marine marine marine and ivory).

    In continuation of the 2020 expedition work for the study of species of indicators, in 2021 spring and summer field studies of the polar bear and the sea horse were carried out on the island. Land of Alexandra (Franz Josef archipelago), the Orange Islands and Cape Zhelaniya in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. In the valleys of the rivers Kheta and Khatanga, wild reindeer habitat was launched and aerial surveys were conducted and the migration routes of the animals in the territory of two municipal districts of the Krasnoyarsk Territory were studied. Field research on the study and conservation of biodiversity in Arctic ecosystems is scheduled to continue in the summer-autumn of 2022.

    More than 120 million young fish, including offspring of the particularly valuable Siberian sturgeon, precious Atlantic and Black Sea salmon, whitefish, whitefish, sterling and muksun.

    Rosneft traditionally pays special attention to reforestation, as forests are a natural source of greenhouse gases. The Company and its subsidiaries planted about 9.3 million saplings of various species in 2021.

    Another strategic priority of the Company in accordance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals is the minimization of fresh water consumption. This is facilitated by the modernization of infrastructure and the use of the best available technologies. In 2021, the Company continued to improve the quality of wastewater discharged through the construction and reconstruction of water treatment plants, including by achieving the ability to design remanufactured treatment plants and maintain the efficiency of wastewater treatment in existing facilities.

    In the context of developing its corporate culture, Rosneft continues to pay close attention to the issues of the Company’s employees and contractors’ responsible attitude towards the environment and the assurance of environmental safety. As part of this activity, the development of environmental literacy and the participation of employees and their families in environmental activities takes place, including the explanatory work carried out in the context of relevant environmental campaigns to develop an understanding of responsible natural resource consumption. . The company participates in large-scale campaigns “Green Spring”, “Earth Hour”, “We Clean the World” and others.
