Change clothes and go shopping with a list. The people of Murmansk were taught Zero Waste

About 70 million tons of waste are generated in Russia annually.

If for a week a garbage truck does not reach the landfill near residential buildings, then mountains of garbage will quickly form on it. Even if we imagine that every family throws garbage once every two days, and there are about 70 such families in a nine-story building, it is not difficult to imagine that in seven days there will be at least 200 bags in the bins, or almost two centimeters of garbage. Now imagine that in Murmansk alone there are about 7800 houses. 1560 tons of garbage per week, without sofas, equipment boxes, clothes, construction rubbish thrown in the trash.

Can the situation be rectified? About this in a lecture in the framework of the project “Arctic Environment”, which was implemented with the support of the international grant competition “Orthodox Initiative”, he said Andrey Petkevich, coordinator of the Nature and Youth Movement in Murmansk. The meeting took place with students of the Murmansk College of Construction. NE Momota.

Forget the trash can … for a moment

– Every year in Russia 70 million tons of waste are produced, each of us has 400-500 kg and only 4% is recyclable. And the reason for this is that most of the waste is plastic. We are told that the issue of recycling has not been resolved, but that is not the whole point of the problem. noted Andrei Petkevich.

There are hundreds of types of plastic and scientists are inventing new ones, and only a few are recyclable. The process needs to be developed in which one thing can be recycled and the resulting material reused, but it would be more appropriate to think in other directions.

So, for example, consume less and use only what you need. This move is called Zero waste. Those who keep it can take out the trash once every three weeks or even less often.

The lecture participants learned life hacks that will help them follow a more environmentally friendly lifestyle.

Oh, one more time

How can you reduce the amount of waste in your bin?

For example, buying a product without packaging. You do not have to carry a plastic bag for fruits and vegetables every time. Special canvas bags for sale that can be used repeatedly. And even more! In the big cities, you can already come with your own cereal container. In the Murmansk region, one can only dream of it so far, but a shop selling household chemicals for bottling has already appeared.

It is also helpful to review things. Instead of buying a new sweater, can you see if there is one in the closet you bought and forgot about? By the way, it makes sense to take things from clothes to equipment. So they can be given a second life. Sometimes brand new things are sold through classified sites. Maybe someone was given a vase for a wedding, but young people do not need it, but it is suitable for you? Save her from the landfill.

– If you still need to buy something in a store, then it is better to get a quality one. The cheap ones will not last long, you throw them away and you have to buy them again. This will increase the amount of waste. It is better to buy, for example, more expensive shoes and use them for several years, – advises Andrey Petkevich. – Another useful tip: when you go to the store, make a shopping list so you do not get too much. This applies, for example, to products that do not spoil in the refrigerator.

There will be less rubbish in the bin if you replace disposable items with reusable ones. Why buy water every time you walk or go to the gym? Get a special bottle that will last more than a year. Instead of T-shirt bags in the store, it is better to use shopper bags or go with your own bag. Picnic utensils can also be reused.

Andrei Petkevich, using his own example, told how to reduce the amount of waste.

Second life

Another way to reduce waste is to sort it. It may seem difficult, but it’s a matter of habit. In Murmansk, you can donate bottle caps, which are recycled and the proceeds go to charity. There are boxes for the delivery of waste paper, it is also accepted in the offices of the organization Nature and Youth and the books can be transported to library crossroads. Charities such as Odos or the Red Cross will be happy to donate clothes. “Nature and Youth” organizes an exchange party where you can bring unnecessary things and take what is missing from your wardrobe.

Batteries, fluorescent lamps and mercury thermometers should be taken from management companies, as they are toxic waste. You can also donate aluminum (foil, boxes, lids).

Unfortunately, there is nowhere to go for glass containers yet, although this situation is planned to be rectified in the summer. Eco-activists from Kirovsk continue to transport the bottles to St. Petersburg for treatment themselves. Also in the bin are burnt, wet, dirty paper and cardboard, boxes with greasy or greasy stains, for example, from pizza or semi-finished products, rings, napkins, checks, four-pack, coffee cups, parchment, tracing paper, foil paper .

Each person produces almost half a ton of waste per year.

– It is important to donate plastic. We do not think about it, but microplastics enter our body, for example, along with food – fish or meat. Our body collects plastic. We are always ready to tell you how to prepare it for delivery, what is not recyclable. For example, tea bags are many types of waste at the same time: tea leaves, the bag itself, a paper clip, a thread and a label. All together can not be processed, – Andrei Petkevich continues. – Unfortunately, many plastics can only be thrown away: non-recyclable materials are cheaper to produce.

At the Nature and Youth team at VKontakte, you can find information on where things are accepted for recycling, as well as various eco-promotions.

Each of us can throw rubbish less often. To do this, you must follow simple rules.
